Wine of the Day: 2014 Gnarly Dudes

For Wednesday, March 9, 2016, Wine Spectator has selected Gnarly Dudes as the “Daily Wine Pick” in the $15 to $30 category.

TWO HANDS Shiraz Barossa Valley Gnarly Dudes 2014
92 points, $30
Polished and rich, with black cherry, dark plum and licorice flavors, merging against a glassy texture and chocolate notes on the long, sleek finish. Drink now through 2022. 11,000 cases made. —Harvey Steiman

Gnarly Dudes  is a perennial favorite in the Two Hands portfolio. “This is really the declassified Bella’s Garden barrels,” Michael Twelftree says. “We go through and taste every barrel in the winery. The barrels that B to B+ go to Gnarly Dudes and the A to A- barrels all go to Bella’s Garden.” The name, by the way, is inspired by the mature vines that provide the grapes, and the classic Jeff Bridges character, “The Dude,” in The Big Lebowski. Why? Because if His Dudeness wasn’t so f—ing partial to White Russians, you can be sure he would deeply abide this wine’s rich flavors!
