More Love for the Sexy Beast

It’s grilling season already in the Desert Southwest, and Arizona-based wine writer Mark Nothaft went in search of wines to pair with marinated, grilled meats and veggies. He found the Two Hands Sexy Beast.

• Two Hands 2013 Sexy Beast, McLaren Vale, Australia. This big but expertly defined Cabernet Sauvignon makes an impression beyond its edgy name and label. Deep, dark red in color, the wine shows lovely floral, red fruit and earthy-chocolate aromas that are mirrored on the palate. It’s dense and delicious with a long finish. A big wine for big appetites. $30.

The great reviews of the 2012 Two Hands wines just keep rolling in. The latest: A rave and a 93-point score from the Wine Spectator for the 2012 Sexy Beast Cabernet Sauvignon.

Here’s the review from the magazine’s man on Australia, Harvey Steiman, in the brand new Wine Spectator Advance (the review will be appear in the Mach 31 issue of the magazine):

Two Hands Cabernet Sauvignon McLaren Vale Sexy Beast 2012 • $40
Ripe, round and generous, with raspberry and black cherry fruit at the core, shaded by spicy, toasty, herbal nuances. This has depth and presence, and the finish doesn’t quit. Drink now through 2022. 4,500 cases made.—H.S.

In his own tasting of the wine, Two Hands’ Michael Twelftree lends his insights into what makes this Cabernet from McLaren Vale special, and why he thinks it will be “phenomenally long-lived.” Check it out:

A Sexy Beast for Valentine’s Day

sexy beastWe were pleased as punch to see Fredric Koeppel include the Two Hands Sexy Beast Cabernet Sauvignon in his recent selections of big reds to pop open for the Super Bowl, but respectfully submit there might be an even better occasion for that particular wine. After all, bubbly is great, and maybe you want to start there, but as your Valentine’s Day evening rolls along, don’t you really want to end up with a Sexy Beast?

Mr. Koeppel’s review:

Two Hands Sexy Beast Cabernet Sauvignon 2011, McLaren Vale. 14.5% alc. Sorta sexy, sorta beastly, but you won’t hate yourself in the morning for hooking up. Dark ruby-mulberry color, close to black; smooth and mellow yet somehow voluminous, with a tang of acidity and a distinct faceted charcoal/granitic character; very spicy, slightly macerated and roasted black currants and plums; clenched tannins give you a soft wallop in the finish. Excellent. About $45.

There Is a Sexy Beast on Facebook

sexy beastSo what’s the story behind this wine’s name? Well, with its rich fruit, tobacco, minty notes, ash and hints of chocolate, Cabernet Sauvignon can be a beast. But when these characters are combined with the long fleshy palate and fine silky tannins, the whole package can be extremely seductive, even sexy. Ergo, Sexy Beast.
